San Quentin State Prison opened in 1852 and is California's oldest penitentiary. Starting in 1893, 215 inmates were hanged at San Quentin. The licensed Psychiatric Inpatient Program at this facility is designed to provide more intensive treatment for patients who cannot function adequately or stabilize in an outpatient program.
